Voice Lessons

The best way to grow and refine your singing voice is to study one-on-one with an experienced teacher. I have limited openings in my home studio in Asheville, NC or virtually over Skype, FaceTime, or Cleanfeed/LiveLab.

FAQs

What is working with you like?

We’ll spend 55 minutes together weekly, either online using your device of choice, or in-person, if you’re local to Western NC.

We will spend a few minutes stretching together and moving our bodies while we chat about how your voice is feeling and your goals for the lesson. Then, we’ll center ourselves and our voices in our singing breath before moving into warm-up exercises. I will create technical exercises that directly address your vocal needs and further prepare your voice for singing. Finally, we will spend time singing any repertoire that you are working on, synthesizing your technical work with practical singing.

What can I expect in my first lesson?

In your first lesson, we will chat about your previous singing experience and your goals for studying voice. Then, you’ll jump right in to singing and breathing exercises! Plan to sing a piece you already know—a hymn or popular tune is totally fine for this.

How should I set up for virtual lessons?

Please have your lesson materials set up and be signed onto Skype or FaceTime at your lesson time. I will initiate the call to start your lesson. Singers should have their device set up where a view of their body from the bust and up can be seen on-screen. It is helpful to have a mirror nearby and a music stand or something to hold your sheet music.

How should I structure my vocal practice?

Singers will be expected to practice on their own time and are encouraged to track their progress using a journal or a practice log.  My recommendations vary depending on the singer and their needs, but a good place to start is to practice approximately five times a week for 15-30 minutes at a time.

Can I record my lesson?

Absolutely! You may use your personal device to record an in-person lesson. I can record the audio from online lessons using a Google Chrome-compatible software called Cleanfeed, if you are calling in from a desktop or laptop computer. I recommend listening back to your lesson the day after to take notes, make observations, and jot down any vocalises or musical elements you’d like to practice.

What kind of songs can I sing?

Anything you’d like! Most studio members bring their own rep, which includes pieces from their community choirs, solos for church, art songs, and musical theater selections. If you are preparing for a particular performance or audition, I will help you select repertoire that is well-suited to your voice and the program that you are offering, taking into consideration vocal range, character of the piece, and overall vocal load.

How much are voice lessons?

Voice lessons and gender-affirming voice training sessions are $100 for 55 minutes. You can also become a member of Diemer Voice Studio with a weekly lesson ($300/month) or a twice monthly lesson ($180/month).

I know that undertaking vocal study is an investment! If you are unable to make this investment right now but are still interested in voice training, please reach out to me. I can help you see if there are grants or scholarships available or help connect you with a clinician who can meet your needs.
